You Are a Real NY’er When:
-
Character Title: Smitten
She was in her late 20s, pretty and petite, with a midwestern sensibility and sweet demeanor. She had walked to the bus stop with a gentleman friend. He stayed with her until the cross-town bus arrived. He stayed there, on the sidewalk, as she dipped her MetroCard. He stayed until she reached the back of the bus and he could give her a wave goodbye. She waved back politely and offered a small smile to show she was set. After he turned, she bit her lower lip, trying to subdue the huge grin spreading across her face. Smitten.

Scene Title: Adventures in Cream Cheese
On this weekend’s trip to the bagel shop I lined up behind a woman in exercise gear, fresh from the gym, treating herself to carbs. “Go ahead,” she said, “I’m still deciding.” The man behind the counter was handing her forks of cream cheese: “This is lox spread, it has the chopped fish mixed in…Try the vegetable…” Strawberry, scallion, walnut-raisin. It was a cross between a gelato sampling and a wine pairing. Me, I’m simple, an onion bagel, toasted, with a schmear. “Oh, um, sorry, miss…we’re out of plain…”

Scene Title: The Aftermath
“Oh, the whole fuckin’ world fucking revolves around you, does it?!” An irate woman in her 20s in a casual-Friday sundress & sandals yells at the top of her lungs. She’s telling off a downtown, sort-of-hipster man around the same age, as they walk in opposite directions. It was hard to determine if this was the aftermath of two harried commuters who bumped into each other on the sidewalk – he failing to apologize. Or, if they were lovers publicly breaking up – she broadcasting his selfishness to the tourists waiting for the hop-on/hop-off bus.

Quote Title: YES!! You’re still here!
Returning from the diner men’s room, a hapless young bachelor declares his delight upon seeing his date still sitting at their table. He said it with such desperation that I wondered if he’d been the casualty of a hasty exit before.

An exasperated worker in a high-rise office building declares, to an ascending elevator, her current status and hopes for the rest of the afternoon.
