an enormous wet white greyhound, tied to a bicycle rack, whimpers as the warm afternoon rain picks up. he stands up and sits down and stands up again. he forgot his umbrella this morning too.

Scene Title: morning greyhound
9am. against the stirring morning sea of yellow taxi cabs, an asian doctor in powder blue scrubs scurries across the street just as the traffic light changes. he’s flanked by his enormous white greyhound, who glides ghostlike across the street in a few long graceful strides, unhurried, actually, like nothing else in the city.

i walk into my neighborhood coffee shop and approach the counter while maybe taking out my wallet.
the girl at the counter, a black 20-something with tight braids, an apron and a hat starts laughing.
confused, i smile, and ask her what’s so funny.
“just laughing,” she says and takes my order.
